PSEUDOMENINGOCELE ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF ADCON-L DURING LUMBAR SPINE SURGERY PSEUDOMENINGOCELE ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF ADCON-L DURING LUMBAR SPINE SURGERY We report a series of six cases of post-operative pseudomeningocele following lumbar spine surgery which occurred over a period of three months. A new anti-adhesion agent (Adcon-L) was used in all of these cases and in a total of 17 cases involving decompression and nine cases in which a fusion procedure was performed in all during this period. Two of the six patients had undergone previous lumbar spine surgery. An intra-operative dural tear was recognized and repaired at the time of surgery in two cases. All patients complained of postural headaches within one day to two weeks after surgery. Four patients required open surgical exploration and repair, and two were treated by a blood patch procedure. We attribute the increased incidence of this complication to the use of the anti-adhesion agent. We suspect the agent inhibits or obstructs the blood clot which normally occurs immediately following surgery and which seals and repairs unnoticed microscopic dural injuries.
