Radiographic Interpretation of Fusion After Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Using the Brantigan I/F Cage

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion using the Brantigan I/F Cage for PLIF with pedicle screw fixation using the VSP Spinal Fixation System has achieved 98.7% fusion success in a large multi-centered study. Comparisons of x-rays and fusion results by surgical exploration have demonstrated that routine x-rays achieve 97.1% sensitivity, a positive predictive value of 94.4%, and an overall accuracy of 83%. Radiographic indications of fusion or pseudarthrosis with the Brantigan I/F Cage have duplicated the historical criteria used for PLIF over the past 50 years.
